The Best Travel Apps, Sorted by What Each One Is For

You don't need fifty travel apps. You need one for each job: planning the days, keeping bookings straight, finding a fare or a room, getting online when you land, getting around, and paying. Here are the apps worth having for each job, grouped by when you'll open them.

Everything said about each app below comes from its own US App Store listing, read on October 21, 2026. Apps change, so check the listing before you rely on a feature.

Before you go: planning the days

Wanderjoy: Itinerary Planner

What it does: puts your whole trip on one map. Tell it where you're going and when, and it drafts a day-by-day plan you can reshape, with a pin for every stop and a route for every day.

Use it for: turning a list of places into days that make sense, and spotting when two stops are too far apart.

Also handy: notes and a packing checklist live with the trip, the plan works offline, a countdown runs to departure, and friends can plan the same trip with you in real time.

TripIt: Travel Planner

What it does: builds an itinerary from your bookings. Forward a flight, hotel or rental car confirmation to its email address and it adds it to your trip.

Use it for: keeping confirmation numbers, times and documents in one place instead of digging through your inbox.

Before you go: flights and places to stay

Hopper: Flights, Hotels & Cars

What it does: books flights, hotels, homes and rental cars, and lets you watch a trip so it can notify you when it thinks it's the time to buy.

Use it for: a trip with flexible dates; its color-coded calendar shows the cheaper days.

Skyscanner Flights & Travel

What it does: compares flight prices across airlines and travel sites, with hotel and rental car search too.

Use it for: a quick read on what a route costs across many airlines at once.

Booking.com: Hotels & Travel

What it does: books hotels and apartments, plus flights, rental cars, taxis and attractions. Its listing notes free cancellation at most properties.

Use it for: booking a stay you may still need to change.

Airbnb

What it does: books vacation rentals, along with experiences hosted by locals.

Use it for: groups, longer stays, or anywhere you want a kitchen.

When you land: getting online

Airalo: eSIM for travel & data

What it does: sells data plans as an eSIM, a digital SIM you install from the app, for single countries, regions or global trips.

Use it for: getting online the moment you arrive without hunting for a SIM card or relying on airport wifi.

On the ground: getting around and understanding things

Google Maps

What it does: directions for driving, walking, cycling and public transport, with live traffic, plus places with photos and reviews.

Use it for: everyday navigation, and checking an area before you go with Street View.

Citymapper: All Live Transit

What it does: compares every way across a city in real time: bus, subway, train, ferry, ride share, bike share, scooters and walking.

Use it for: big cities with complicated transit, where it shows options side by side.

Google Translate

What it does: translates typed text, speech, conversations and, through the camera, signs and menus. Some languages work offline.

Use it for: menus, signs and quick conversations.

Money

Wise: Global Money Transfer

What it does: sends money internationally and holds money in several currencies, with a card for spending abroad (availability depends on where you live).

Use it for: paying abroad without guessing at exchange rates.

Xe Money Transfer & Currency

What it does: a currency converter and live exchange rate tracker, with international money transfers.

Use it for: checking what a price really is in dollars.

How they fit together

  • •

Plan the days first. Decide where you'll be on each day, then book around it; it's easier to pick a hotel once you know which neighborhoods you'll spend time in.

  • •

Book, then forward the confirmations. Keep one place for confirmations so nothing gets lost.

  • •

Sort data before you fly. Install the eSIM at home while you still have wifi.

  • •

Download what you'll need offline. Maps, translations for the local language and your itinerary, before you leave.

A short, well-chosen set beats a full home screen. Start with the plan; everything else slots in around it.
