Kauai itinerary: 5 days for a first trip
A 5-day Kauai itinerary for a first trip, one side of the island at a time so you aren't driving back and forth: the Lydgate rock ponds, saimin in Līhuʻe and ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls on day 1; the Māhāʻulepū cliffs, Kauaʻi Coffee and Brennecke's Beach around Poʻipū on day 2; Waimea Canyon, Waipoʻo Falls and Kōkeʻe on day 3; Salt Pond, the swinging bridge and Hanapēpē's Friday art night on day 4; and the north shore, from the Kīlauea Point lighthouse to ʻAnini and Hanalei Pier, on day 5.
Every stop sits on one map, colored by day, so you can see how the island fits together. It's one of the sample trips inside the Wanderjoy app, so you can open this exact plan on your iPhone with code HAWA3 and change anything, like moving the Hanapēpē day to land on a Friday. Check the state park and refuge sites before you go.

Day by day
Day 1Lydgate Beach Park · Kress St · Kuamoʻo Rd
Lydgate Beach Rock Ponds10:00 AM
Two boulder-walled ponds keep the ocean out, so this is the easiest place on Kauai to snorkel on your first jet-lagged morning.
Hamura Saimin Lunch1:00 PM
ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls Overlook3:30 PM
Stay behind the fence — the unofficial trail below it is on private land, unstable, and has killed people.
Day 2Shipwreck Beach · Kalaheo · Brennecke's Beach
Māhāʻulepū Heritage Trail8:00 AM
Two miles one way along lithified sand cliffs from Shipwreck Beach to Māhāʻulepū, on the driest, most reliably sunny coast of the island.
Kauaʻi Coffee Estate Tasting12:00 PM
Brennecke's Beach Bodyboard3:30 PM
Day 3Waimea Canyon Dr · Halemanu Rd · Kōkeʻe State Park
Puʻu Hinahina Lookout8:30 AM
Around mile marker 13, higher and usually less crowded than the main canyon lookout, with a second platform pointing out at Niʻihau.
Canyon Trail to Waipoʻo Falls10:30 AM
About 3.4 miles round trip from the Halemanu Road turnoff to a ledge above the canyon's big waterfall, with a red-dirt descent that gets slick after rain. A regular rental car can usually manage the first stretch of Halemanu, but walk it if it looks rutted rather than risking the undercarriage.
Kōkeʻe Museum & Trail Board1:30 PM

Salt Pond Beach Park10:00 AM
A reef-sheltered swimming beach beside the last working Hawaiian salt pans, where families still harvest paʻakai by hand each summer.

Hanalei Pier Walk4:00 PM
The 1892 pier at Black Pot Beach sits under the waterfall-streaked mountains that define the north shore, and late afternoon is when the light hits them.
