Tokyo itinerary: 5 days for a first trip

A 5-day Tokyo food itinerary, built around what to eat rather than what to see: Toyosu Market at dawn, monjayaki in Tsukishima and yakitori under the Ginza tracks; a ramen day from Ichiran's solo booths to Afuri's yuzu broth and Nakiryu's tantanmen; Isetan's basement food hall and the snack stalls of Yanaka Ginza; omakase at Sushi Sho, Koenji's old coffee houses and the Yurakucho izakayas; then Onigiri Bongo, Kappabashi's kitchen shops and farewell beers on Hoppy Street.

Day by day

Day 1Toyosu ยท Tsukishima ยท Corridor Street

  1. Toyosu Market Tuna Auction Viewing5:30 AM

The famous tuna auction moved from Tsukiji to Toyosu โ€” watch from the viewing gallery as buyers bid on bluefin tuna. After, eat at Sushi Dai or Daiwa Sushi inside the market.

  2. Tsukishima Monjayaki Street12:00 PM

Tokyo's answer to okonomiyaki โ€” runnier batter grilled on a teppan until crispy on the bottom. Moheji is the classic spot.

  3. Ginza Corridor Street Izakayas7:00 PM

Under-the-tracks dining โ€” tiny restaurants beneath the Shimbashi railway arches.

Day 2Jinnan ยท Ebisu ยท Minamioi

  1. Ichiran Ramen (Solo Booth Experience)11:00 AM

Individual curtained booths โ€” just you and your ramen, no distractions. Customize everything: broth richness, noodle firmness, garlic level, spice.

  2. Afuri Ramen (Yuzu Shio)3:00 PM

Light, citrusy yuzu salt ramen โ€” the anti-heavy bowl. Made with spring water from Mt. Afuri.

  3. Nakiryu (Tantanmen Ramen)7:00 PM

Their tantanmen (sesame chili) is complex and layered. The wonton version is extraordinary. This might be the best bowl of noodles you'll ever eat.

Day 3Shinjuku ยท Yanaka Ginza

  1. Isetan Shinjuku Depachika (Basement Food Hall)10:00 AM

Japanese department store basement food floors are an art form โ€” Isetan's is the best in Tokyo. Each counter is a specialty shop: wagashi, French pastry, sushi, pickles, bento.

  2. Yanaka Ginza (Old Tokyo Snack Street)2:00 PM

Retro shopping street in old-town Tokyo โ€” try the famous cat-tail donut at Yanaka Shippoya, menchi-katsu (fried meat patty) at Suzuki, and kakigori (shaved ice) in summer. The sunset view from Yuyake Dandan stairs is Tokyo's best-kept secret.

Day 4Yotsuya ยท Koenji ยท Yurakucho

  1. Sushi Omakase at Sushi Sho11:30 AM

High-end omakase โ€” Sushi Sho serves 20+ courses of seasonal nigiri at the counter. The chef explains each fish.

  2. Koenji Kissaten Hopping2:30 PM

Tokyo's vintage neighborhood has incredible kissaten (old-school coffee shops).

  3. Yurakucho Gado-shita Izakayas7:00 PM

Smoke-filled izakayas under the Yamanote Line tracks โ€” trains rumble overhead while you drink cheap beer and eat yakitori. This is blue-collar Tokyo dining at its finest.

Day 5Kitaotsuka ยท Kappabashi ยท Hoppy Street

  1. Onigiri Bongo (Legendary Rice Balls)9:00 AM

The most famous onigiri in Tokyo โ€” hand-formed rice balls with 50+ filling options. The shake (salmon) and umeboshi (plum) are classics, but try sujiko (salmon roe) or niku-miso (meat miso).

  2. Kappabashi Kitchen Street12:00 PM

Tokyo's kitchen supply street โ€” buy the same knives, ceramics, and tools that restaurants use. The plastic food sample shops let you make your own replica sushi.

  3. Hoppy Street Asakusa (Farewell Beers)4:00 PM

Outdoor drinking street near Senso-ji โ€” tables spill onto the sidewalk, cheap beer and highballs flow, grilled beef tongue and motsu-niko (stewed offal) sizzle. This is where old Asakusa comes alive.
