Maui First-Timer Essentials 2026
Maui, Hawaii · Mar 9 – Mar 13 · 5 days · 15 stops
🌺 Book-Ahead List (in order of urgency): • Mama's Fish House: 4–6 months out • Old Lāhainā Lūʻau: 2–3 months out • Haleakalā sunrise: exactly 60 days out, 7am HST on recreation.gov ($1 + $30/car) • Molokini boat: 2–3 weeks out (take the earliest departure) ______ 🚗 Getting Around: • You need a rental car all five days — Maui has no real transit • Base yourself in Kīhei (budget) or Wailea/Kāʻanapali (resort); everything on this plan is under 90 minutes away • For Haleakalā sunrise, leave the coast by 3:30am — it's a 2-hour climb ______ 🐠 Water Rules: • Morning water is always calmer — snorkel before 10am • Reef-safe mineral sunscreen is Hawaii law • Never turn your back on the ocean at unguarded beaches ______ 💡 Tips: • Pack real layers: 85°F at the beach, 40°F at the summit, same day • March is late whale season — Kealia boardwalk and any west-facing beach double as free whale-watching
ʻĪao Valley · Wailuku · Pāʻia
1:00 PM · ʻĪao Valley, Wailuku
The emerald needle rising 1,200 feet out of the rainforest is 15 minutes from the airport — perfect first stop while you wait for hotel check-in. Reserve parking online ($10) before you land.
3:00 PM · Wailuku, Maui
Maui's old plantation-era county seat, five minutes from ʻĪao — antique shops, murals, and zero resort markup on coffee. First Friday of the month turns Market Street into a block party.
6:00 PM · 799 Poho Pl, Pāʻia
The splurge dinner of the trip — the menu names the fisherman who caught your fish that morning. Book 4–6 months ahead (really); ask for a beachfront table at sunset.
Haleakalā Summit · Aliʻi Kula Lavender · Makawao
5:30 AM · Haleakalā Summit, Maui
Sunrise above the clouds at 10,023 feet — book the $1 reservation at recreation.gov exactly 60 days out (plus $30/car park entry). Leave the coast by 3:30am and bring every layer you packed; it's 40°F up there.
9:30 AM · Aliʻi Kula Lavender, Kula
Descend from the summit into upcountry's rolling farmland — 55,000 lavender plants with a bi-coastal view. $3 entry; the lavender scone with coffee fixes the 3am wake-up.
12:00 PM · Makawao, Maui
Hawaii's cowboy town — paniolo history, art galleries, and Komoda Store's legendary cream puffs (go before they sell out, usually by 11; closed Wednesdays and Sundays).
Molokini Crater · Maluaka Beach · South Kīhei Rd
7:00 AM · Molokini Crater, Maui
A sunken volcanic crescent with 150-foot visibility — the classic Maui snorkel. Book the earliest boat from Māʻalaea (~$150): morning water is glass and the crater gets crowded by 10.
1:00 PM · Maluaka Beach, Mākena
The shore-entry snorkel spot the boats call Turtle Town — green sea turtles graze the reef at the south end most afternoons. Small free lot by the Keawala'i church fills early.
5:30 PM · South Kīhei Rd, Kīhei
The food-truck lot across from Kalama Park does everything from garlic shrimp to poke nachos at half of resort prices. Sunset from the seawall across the street is free.
Honoapiʻilani Hwy · Kealia Pond · Kīhei
10:00 AM · Honoapiʻilani Hwy, Waikapū
A working 500-acre farm under the West Maui Mountains — the 40-minute tram tour ($26) covers coconut husking, coffee, and cacao, and the farm stand's fruit is the freshest on the island.
1:30 PM · Kealia Pond, North Kīhei
A free 2,200-foot boardwalk over a national wildlife refuge — endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots feed in the ponds, and whales breach offshore in winter. Breezy, flat, and never crowded.
3:30 PM · 61 S Kīhei Rd, Kīhei
Maui's best shave ice — order it 'snowcap style' with sweet cream drizzle over lilikoi and guava, plus mac-nut ice cream at the bottom. About $8 and worth every penny.
Kāʻanapali Beach · Front Street · Front St
9:00 AM · Kāʻanapali Beach, Kāʻanapali
Three miles of resort-lined gold sand; snorkel the lava point at Black Rock where turtles cruise the wall. Park early at Whalers Village (validate with any purchase).
12:30 PM · Front Street, Lāhainā
Lahaina is rebuilding after the August 2023 fire. Front Street reopened in August 2026 with ʻUlu o Lele Marketplace and a growing list of shops, while parts of the historic core are still under construction, so walk the reopened stretch and support the businesses that are back.
5:30 PM · Front St, Lāhainā
Widely considered Hawaii's most authentic lūʻau — oceanfront mats, imu-roasted pig, and hula that tells Maui's own story. Books out 2–3 months ahead (~$180/adult); the perfect finale.
