Waikiki Beach · Kalākaua Ave · Halekulani
9:30 AM · Waikiki Beach, Honolulu
Start with the classic — rent a board or just float with Diamond Head in view. Beach boys by the police station rent longboards for about $25 an hour.
12:00 PM · Kalākaua Ave, Waikiki
Pay respects to the father of modern surfing — the lei-draped statue is Waikiki's most photographed spot. The beach cam behind it streams live if you want to wave to family.
5:30 PM · Halekulani, Waikiki
Live Hawaiian music and hula under the century-old kiawe tree while the sun drops behind the ocean. No resort fee to sit — order a mai tai and the coconut cake and settle in.
Diamond Head State Monument · Kanaina Ave · Sans Souci Beach
7:00 AM · Diamond Head State Monument, Honolulu
The 0.8-mile crater-rim trail ends at a WWII bunker with the best 360° view on the island. Out-of-state visitors must reserve entry online ($5) — book the 7am slot to beat the heat.
11:00 AM · Kanaina Ave, Honolulu
The 1961 plate-lunch institution five minutes from the crater — mixed plate with gravy, two scoops rice, mac salad, about $13. Obama's childhood order was the loco moco.
5:00 PM · Sans Souci Beach, Waikiki
The locals' end of Waikiki — calm, uncrowded water by the Natatorium with a straight-on sunset view. A monk seal naps on this sand a few times a month; keep 50 feet back.
Pearl Harbor · Honolulu · N Nimitz Hwy
8:00 AM · Pearl Harbor, Honolulu
The USS Arizona Memorial boat program is free but timed tickets release on recreation.gov 8 weeks out — reserve early. Allow 3 hours; bags aren't allowed inside.
1:00 PM · 364 S King St, Honolulu
The only royal palace on U.S. soil — home of Hawaii's last monarchs. The docent-led tour ($30) tells the overthrow story far better than the audio version.
5:30 PM · N Nimitz Hwy, Honolulu
Harbor-front fish house right at the Honolulu fish auction pier — the furikake-crusted ahi comes off the boats you're looking at. Order at the counter and grab a dockside table.
Haleʻiwa · Sunset Beach · Waimea Bay
9:30 AM · Haleʻiwa, North Shore
Surf-town main street of boutiques and food trucks — the hour drive from Waikiki is worth it. Matsumoto Shave Ice with condensed milk is the mandatory stop.
12:30 PM · 59-024 Kamehameha Hwy, Sunset Beach
The chocolate-haupia (coconut cream) pie that fuels the North Shore surf scene — grab a plate lunch and a slice, then eat across the road at Sunset Beach. Whole pies sell out by afternoon.
3:00 PM · Waimea Bay, North Shore
Glassy jump-rock swimming in summer, 30-foot big-wave arena in winter. If the surf is up, watch from the beach — and check Pipeline 10 minutes up the road too.
Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve · Makapuʻu Point · Pali Hwy
7:30 AM · Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, Honolulu
Oahu's best beginner reef — 400+ fish species in a sheltered volcanic bowl. Reservations ($25) drop online 2 days ahead at 7am and sell out in minutes; closed Mon/Tue.
11:30 AM · Makapuʻu Point, Waimānalo
A paved 2-mile round trip to the red-roofed 1909 lighthouse with whale sightings all winter — completely free. No shade on the trail; bring water and a hat.
4:00 PM · Pali Hwy, Honolulu
Sweeping windward-coast panorama from the cliff where Kamehameha won Oahu in 1795. It's seriously windy — hold your hat. Parking is $7 per car, quick stop on the drive back.
