NYC Holiday Season 2026
New York City · Dec 2 – Dec 6 · 5 days · 15 stops
🎄 WHAT OPENS WHEN • The Rockefeller tree is lit the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and burns 05:00 to midnight daily after that • Union Square and Columbus Circle markets both run mid-November to 24 December; Grand Central's fair is the same window • Bryant Park's rink opens in late October and skating is free if you bring skates, $22-35 to hire • Bergdorf and Macy's unveil their windows in the last week of November and hold them into early January ______ 🎟️ BOOK THESE BEFORE YOU FLY • The Nutcracker at the Koch Theater starts near $45 and the December weekend matinees go first • The NYBG Train Show and BBG Lightscape are timed-entry only, around $35, and Saturday slots sell out weeks ahead • Radio City runs up to five shows a day; the 09:30 and 22:00 slots are consistently the cheapest • Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights is ticketed separately from daytime zoo admission — check which one you bought ______ 🕕 CROWD TIMING • Rockefeller Center between 17:00 and 21:00 in December is barely walkable; go before 09:00 or after 22:30 • Saks runs its facade show every ten minutes from 17:00, so there is no reason to arrive early for it • Dyker Heights peaks 18:00-21:00 at weekends — a Wednesday is the same lights and a tenth of the people • Grand Central's fair is indoors, free, and at its quietest before midday ______ 🚇 REACHING THE OUTER STOPS • Metro-North from Grand Central to Botanical Garden is 20 minutes and about $8 off-peak • Dyker Heights: D train to 71st Street then the B1 bus east, or a 20-minute walk from 18th Avenue • Brooklyn Botanic is the 2/3 to Eastern Parkway, and Lightscape admits only at the Washington Avenue gate • Add 20 minutes to every journey — December weekend service changes are constant and badly signed ______ 🧣 EARLY DECEMBER • Minus 1 to 7°C and dark by 16:30, which means the lights are on for most of the afternoon • The first fortnight is the whole season without the final-week crush, and hotel rates jump after 15 December • Waterproof boots matter more than a heavy coat; the sidewalk slush is what ruins a day • Nothing here needs snow, and the city rarely gets any before January
Bryant Park · Midtown · Rockefeller Plaza
3:30 PM · Bryant Park, Midtown
The only free ice rink in the city — skating costs nothing if you bring your own, $22-35 to hire a pair. It opens at 08:00 and the 09:00-11:00 slot is the one where you can actually move.
5:30 PM · 611 5th Avenue, Midtown
The whole ten-storey facade runs a synchronised light show every ten minutes from 17:00 until about 23:00, free. Watch from the west side of Fifth outside the cathedral, where the full building fits in frame.
10:30 PM · Rockefeller Plaza, Midtown
Lit from 05:00 to midnight daily once the ceremony passes, and topped with a 900-pound Swarovski star. Between 17:00 and 21:00 the plaza is barely walkable; at 22:30 you can stand in front of it alone.
Union Square · Herald Square · Midtown
12:00 PM · Union Square, Manhattan
About 150 red-and-white stalls from mid-November to 24 December, 11:00-20:00, free to walk. It is the one market where most sellers actually made what they are selling; go before 15:00 on a weekday.
3:00 PM · 151 West 34th Street, Herald Square
Six animated windows on the Broadway side, unveiled in the third week of November and running through the first week of January. Free, and the queue moves in one direction — join at the 34th Street end.
7:00 PM · 6th Avenue, Midtown
The Rockettes have run this since 1933 and the 36 dancers still do the wooden-soldier fall in one line. Tickets start near $59 and there are up to five shows a day — the 09:30 and 22:00 slots are always the cheapest.
Vanderbilt Hall · Southern Boulevard
11:00 AM · Vanderbilt Hall, Grand Central Terminal
Around 40 stalls in Vanderbilt Hall from mid-November to Christmas Eve, free entry, indoors and warm. Quietest before 12:00, and it is 90 seconds from the Metro-North platform you want next.
2:00 PM · Southern Boulevard, The Bronx
Model trains running through 190 New York landmarks built entirely from bark, seeds and twigs, inside an 1902 glasshouse. Timed tickets around $35 and December weekends sell out weeks ahead; Metro-North from Grand Central is 20 minutes.
6:00 PM · Southern Boulevard, The Bronx
Animal lanterns, an ice-carving stage and a wooden train through the lights, 17:00-22:00 and ticketed separately from day admission at about $35. A ten-minute walk south from the Botanical Garden gate, so the two pair on one day.
Cobble Hill · Prospect Heights · Dyker Heights
11:30 AM · 187 Atlantic Avenue, Cobble Hill
A Lebanese grocery on Atlantic since 1948, with open bins of dates, nuts and spices and a deli counter that takes a ticket. December is its busiest month — arrive before 12:00 or you will wait 30 minutes for halva.
4:30 PM · 990 Washington Avenue, Prospect Heights
A mile-long after-dark trail of light installations through the garden, timed entry from 16:30 at about $35. Entry is the Washington Avenue gate only, the walk takes 75 minutes, and the cherry esplanade section is the one to slow down for.
7:30 PM · 11th Avenue and 84th Street, Dyker Heights
Twenty or so blocks of houses that spend five figures each on displays, concentrated between 11th and 13th Avenues and 83rd to 86th. Free, peak 18:00-21:00; the D train to 71st Street then the B1 bus beats any tour bus at $60.
Midtown · David H. Koch Theater · Columbus Circle
10:30 AM · 754 5th Avenue, Midtown
Seven windows that take a year to build and are the only ones in the city treated as an art commission. Unveiled in the last week of November, up until early January, free, and empty before 11:00 on a Sunday.
1:00 PM · David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center
Balanchine's 1954 staging with 90 dancers, 62 children from the school, and a Christmas tree that grows to 41 feet on stage. Tickets from about $45, Sunday matinees at 13:00, and the fourth ring is the cheapest seat with a full view.
5:00 PM · Columbus Circle, Central Park South
About 100 stalls at the park's south-west corner, late November to Christmas Eve, 10:00-20:00 and free to enter. Four minutes' walk from the theatre, and the food stalls at the park end are the cheapest hot meal in the neighbourhood.
