Where Travelers Are Planning Trips Right Now
Most "best destinations" lists are somebody's opinion. This one counts real plans. Between late July and October 20, 2026, travelers in the US built thousands of trips in Wanderjoy, and every trip records where it goes, the dates and what the traveler said they were into. Below are the places that came up most, how long people stay, when they go and what they want to do there.
One honest caveat first: our own short videos regularly feature New York City, Hawaii, Tokyo, Chicago, London, Paris, Seoul and Las Vegas, so those cities are lifted by people who saw them. The second list further down is the cleaner signal: places we have posted about only once or a few times.
The most-planned destinations
1. New York City
- β’
Typical trip: 4 days
- β’
When people go: October, then December and November
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, photography, shopping
- β’
Planned about: 3β4 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: group each day by neighborhood (Midtown, Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn) instead of crossing the city twice a day. Our New York City 5-day itinerary on the Itineraries page does exactly that.
2. Oahu (Honolulu)
- β’
Typical trip: 6 days
- β’
When people go: August through October
- β’
Most-picked interests: adventure, food, relaxing
- β’
Planned about: 3 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: most people base in Waikiki; the North Shore is about an hour's drive, so give it its own day.
3. Chicago
- β’
Typical trip: 4 days
- β’
When people go: October, then November and December
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, photography, culture
- β’
Planned about: 2β3 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: the Loop, the Riverwalk and River North sit close together, so a first day on foot covers a lot.
4. Tokyo
- β’
Typical trip: 8 days, about twice a US city break
- β’
When people go: October and November
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, culture, shopping
- β’
Planned about: 5 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: plan by area (Shinjuku and Shibuya one day, Asakusa and Ueno another); the city is too big to zigzag.
5. Maui
- β’
Typical trip: 8 days
- β’
When people go: August and September
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, adventure, relaxing
- β’
Planned about: 2β3 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: the Road to Hana takes a full day; plan nothing else for it.
6. London
- β’
Typical trip: 4 days
- β’
When people go: September and October
- β’
Most-picked interests: culture, food, shopping
- β’
Planned about: 4 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: many of the big museums have free general entry, which makes them easy to slot between other stops.
7. Paris
- β’
Typical trip: 6 days
- β’
When people go: October, then December
- β’
Most-picked interests: shopping, food, culture
- β’
Planned about: 6 weeks ahead, the earliest of the top 12
- β’
Planning tip: the busiest sights sell timed tickets; book those first and build each day around them.
8. Las Vegas
- β’
Typical trip: 4 days
- β’
When people go: October and November
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, shopping, photography
- β’
Planned about: 2 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: distances on the Strip are longer than they look on a map; group stops by end of the Strip.
9. Mexico City
- β’
Typical trip: 6 days
- β’
When people go: October
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, culture, adventure
- β’
Planned about: 10 days ahead, the shortest notice in the list
- β’
Planning tip: the city sits at about 2,240 meters (7,350 feet); keep the first day light.
10. Kauai
- β’
Typical trip: 7 days
- β’
When people go: August through October
- β’
Most-picked interests: adventure, nature, relaxing
- β’
Planned about: 3 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: no road runs around the NΔ Pali Coast, so the north and west sides are separate day trips.
11. Rome
- β’
Typical trip: 5 days
- β’
When people go: September
- β’
Most-picked interests: culture, food, photography
- β’
Planned about: 2 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: give the Vatican Museums a timed ticket and a morning of their own.
12. Seoul
- β’
Typical trip: 9 days, the longest in the list
- β’
When people go: October and September
- β’
Most-picked interests: food, culture, shopping
- β’
Planned about: 3 weeks ahead
- β’
Planning tip: a T-money transit card covers the subway and buses.
Picked with little nudge from us
We have posted about these cities only once or a few times, so most people planning them found them on their own:
- β’
Los Angeles: 5 days, mostly October and November, food and shopping
- β’
San Francisco: 5 days, often planned with only a week's notice
- β’
Boston: 3 days, almost all in October
- β’
Seattle: 5 days, food, adventure and nature
- β’
Edinburgh: 4 days, culture and food
- β’
Barcelona: 5 days, food and photography
Three patterns worth knowing
- β’
City breaks run about 4 days. New York, Chicago, London and Las Vegas all land there, so a 4-day plan is a realistic starting point for a first visit.
- β’
Long-haul trips run longer. Tokyo (8 days) and Seoul (9) get about twice the time of a US city, and the Hawaiian islands sit in between (6β8 days).
- β’
Most trips are planned 2β5 weeks out. Of the most-planned cities, Paris and Tokyo are planned earliest (5β6 weeks) and Mexico City latest (about 10 days); San Francisco trips are often planned only a week ahead.
How we counted
- β’
Source: trips created in the Wanderjoy app by travelers in the US, July 23 to October 20, 2026.
- β’
Trip length: from the start and end dates each traveler chose.
- β’
When people go: the month each trip starts. Because the data covers late summer and fall planning, fall months come up most; read it as "when people planned in this window", not a year-round ranking.
- β’
Interests: the preferences each traveler picked before the plan was drafted.
- β’
Variants merged: "New York", "New York, NY" and "Manhattan" count as one city, and so on.
- β’
What we never use: names, accounts or anything that identifies a person. Only counts and medians appear here.
We will refresh these numbers as more trips come in.
